Westcott Street Cultural Fair Multi-Cultural Parade


PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS FOR MARCHERS WHEELED ENTRIES (a.k.a. FLOATS) and BANNERS

FLOATS 

Theme:

Floats should promote the mission of the Westcott Street Cultural Fair:  the celebration of the diversity of the Westcott neighborhood.  Creations that involve collaborations between permanent and student residents are encouraged. Only floats whose message or theme is consistent with the idea of diversity will be accepted for the parade.

Appearance:

  • Floats must be non-motorized and clearly identify the sponsor.
  • Floats on wheels are not to exceed 3’ x 3’ x 3’
  • Floats need to be pulled or pushed by individuals, not animals or engines.
  • Floats may contained battery powered lights and/or live music.
  • Floats may contain decorations, provided they are firmly affixed to the float.
  • We encourage the use of reused or recycled materials, if possible.

Parade Route:

  • Floats must arrive for parade line-up between 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. on the day of the parade.  Late arrivals may lose their place in line and be assigned further back in the parade. 
  • Spacing of 15 FEET between groups is required.  All marchers are expected to close any gaps between floats when asked to do so by parade officials.
  • Entrants must follow instructions from police and parade officials. 
  •  Entrants must maintain forward motion.  DO NOT STOP unless you are asked to do so by parade officials.   If you are stopped, entertain spectators until you start again.  The crowd loves this.
  • You must monitor your float during the entire parade route.
  • Those accompanying floats must march alongside, no riders please. 
  • Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the staging area or while traveling the parade route.
  • Decorated trikes are welcome, but only at the parade, not the fair itself
  • Candy and other objects may not be thrown by marchers, but may be handed out.

Application/approval process:

  • Organizations, businesses and groups wanting to enter floats in the parade must submit an application no later than September 8, 2008,to the Westcott Street Cultural Fair, 826 Euclid Street, Syracuse New York 13210, or as a word document attached to an E-mail sent to info@westcottfair.org.  Donations are accepted and payable to WSCF.
  • All applications for floats are subject to approval by the parade committee, which will then notify applicants of their decision within one week of receipt of the application. So, the sooner you register, the better!
  • The parade committee will determine placement of floats in the parade and will notify organizations no later than September 12, 2008

BANNERS

  • Banner messages should promote the mission of the Westcott Street Cultural Fair: the celebration of the diversity of the Westcott neighborhood.  Banners that involve collaborations between permanent and student residents are encouraged.   Banners whose message or theme is not consistent with this mission will not be accepted for the parade.
  •   Groups wishing to carry banners must register for the parade no later than September 12, 2008, by sending an E-mail to info@westcottfair.org, the preferred method, or by calling (315) 703-6848.
  • Banners must be secured at both ends and be no longer than 5 feet.  Decorations must be firmly attached to banners.
  • Banners must be carried by at least two marchers at all times.
